Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants can get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated initially, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing assortment of betting options and because you have many players battling for the high hand, and several shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
