Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in just about all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease.
