Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease.
