Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha High-Low provides an amazing collection of betting possibilities and because you have several individuals trying for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
